Background of the Study
The aging population in Nigeria, including Katsina State, has been steadily increasing, highlighting the need for specialized care for older adults. The elderly are more susceptible to chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and dementia, which can significantly affect their daily functioning and quality of life (Aliyu et al., 2023). For many elderly individuals, particularly those in rural areas, the lack of adequate healthcare infrastructure means that access to in-hospital care is limited. This has led to an increased reliance on home care services as a means to manage health and enhance the quality of life for elderly individuals (Muhammad & Garba, 2024).
Geriatric home care services offer personalized support to elderly individuals, focusing on medical, physical, and psychological care, and have been found to improve health outcomes and life satisfaction among older adults (Danjuma et al., 2023). These services can include assistance with daily activities, medication management, chronic disease management, and companionship, all of which can help prevent the institutionalization of elderly patients and provide a higher level of independence (Abdulkareem et al., 2023). However, there is limited research on the impact of these services in Katsina State, particularly in rural communities where elderly care options are scarce.
This study seeks to assess the impact of geriatric home care services on the quality of life of older adults in Katsina State, with a focus on how these services can improve health, mobility, mental well-being, and overall life satisfaction.
Statement of the Problem
The elderly population in Katsina State faces significant health challenges, compounded by limited access to healthcare services and specialized care. The quality of life for older adults in the region is often diminished by chronic conditions, social isolation, and inadequate health management. Although geriatric home care services have been shown to improve outcomes for elderly individuals globally, the specific impact of such services on the quality of life of older adults in Katsina State is under-researched. This study aims to investigate the relationship between geriatric home care services and the overall quality of life of elderly individuals in the state.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the impact of geriatric home care services on the health outcomes of older adults in Katsina State.
To assess how geriatric home care services influence the mobility, mental health, and daily functioning of elderly individuals in Katsina State.
To explore the challenges and barriers to the provision and effectiveness of geriatric home care services in Katsina State.
Research Questions
How do geriatric home care services impact the health outcomes of elderly adults in Katsina State?
What effect do geriatric home care services have on the mobility, mental health, and daily functioning of elderly adults in Katsina State?
What challenges hinder the provision and effectiveness of geriatric home care services in Katsina State?
Research Hypotheses
Geriatric home care services have a significant positive impact on the health outcomes of elderly adults in Katsina State.
Elderly adults who receive geriatric home care services experience improved mobility, mental health, and daily functioning.
Barriers such as insufficient resources, inadequate training, and limited access to healthcare services negatively affect the provision and effectiveness of geriatric home care services in Katsina State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on elderly adults living in both urban and rural areas of Katsina State, assessing the impact of geriatric home care services on their quality of life. The study will examine health outcomes, mobility, mental well-being, and daily functioning as key indicators of quality of life. Limitations may include challenges in accessing elderly individuals in remote areas and potential biases in self-reported data regarding life satisfaction.
